New Sawereso-Seinuah is a sub-national kingdom located in the Kukuom Traditional Area of Ahafo, Republic of Ghana, approx. 3 km (1.87 miles) north-east of Sayeraso, and approx. 35.4 km (22 miles) south-west of the capital city of Goaso. Predating the founding of the Republic of Ghana, which occurred in mid-1960, the traditional Kingdom of New Sawereso-Seinuah was established in the late 1940s. It is a member kingdom of the Asante Empire which, in 1935, was granted self-rule sovereignty by Great Britain as Kingdom of Asante.[2]
Hierarchy
New Sawereso-Seinuah is ruled by a Divisional Chief who, in European ranks, equates to either a ruling Prince or a King. The Divisional Chief is subordinate to the Paramount Chief whose rank equates to King. The Paramount Chief, in turn, is subordinate to the Asantehene whose rank equates to that of King or Emperor.[3]
The current hierarchy for New Sawereso-Seinuah is:
- Asantehene: Otumfuo Osei Tutu II[4]
- Paramount Chief: Osahene Kweku Aterkyi II
- Divisional Chief: Nana Agyemang Duah Katakyie III
New Sawereso-Seinuah currently consists of eleven communities, each consisting of Sub-divisional Chiefs (Twi: Odikro) and Queen Mothers (Twi: Adikrofour and Adikro Henaafour), all of whom are subordinate to the Divisional Chief.
Language
The primary language of New Sawereso-Seinuah is Twi, an ancient dialect of the Akan language.
Economy
Farming is the senior occupation in New Sawereso-Seinuah, as it is throughout Ghana. Other occupations include marketing and entrepreneurship. However, none of these occupations provide notable earnings, the average citizen of New Sawereso-Seinuah earning an equivalent of less than one U.S. dollar a day.
Agriculture
The chief agricultural product of New Sawereso-Seinuah is cocoa. Crops contending for the chief position include plantain, cassava, and cocoyam, followed by a variety of other mixed fruits and vegetables.
